“He should get an Oscar for wearing a three-piece suit so well.” —Crystal, slightly lustfully, on Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Inception

2010 Movies Update

True Grit and Exit Through the Gift Shop are in, the latter is available on Netflix Instant and I highly recommend you check it out.  I’m also thinking possibly that Easy A is in there too.  It most likely is.  But I need to see a few more before the final list is made.  As it stands now, the old list of:

The Book of Eli
Shutter Island
Kick-Ass
Get Him to the Greek
Splice
The A-Team
Toy Story 3
Inception
The Town
The Social Network

Would lose Shutter Island, Splice, and The Book of Eli if need be.  All are still very much recommended, but when I need to hit that arbitrary “top ten” something has to go.

  • Bateman: You like Huey Lewis and the News?
  • Paul Allen: They're OK.
  • Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
  • Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.
  • Bateman: Yes, Allen?
  • Paul Allen: Why are there copies of the Style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
  • Bateman: No, Allen.
  • Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?
  • Bateman: Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. [rapidly, as if agitated] But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself. [raises axe above head] Hey Paul!
  • [he bashes Allen in the head with the axe, and blood splatters over him]
  • Bateman: TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU FUCKING BASTARD!

Sometimes I forget that I like some movies more than I rightfully should and that most people probably won’t get references because they haven’t seen it 10 times.  To clarify, I don’t think I have an opinion on Whitney Houston, I know she was in The Bodyguard and likes to do crack and had some hits in the 90s, none of which I can name besides IIIIIIIEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIII.

And when I was in my last American Psycho mood a month or two ago I may have implied that I had some very deep feelings about Genesis.  This is also false.  The Peter Gabriel stuff was pretty good but the poppy Phil Collins stuff wasn’t as much.  My parents used to listen to them ALL THE TIME when I was a kid so I am actually able to follow along and recite about 90% of their stuff, don’t know if this is good or bad.

Did you know that Whitney Houston’s debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it?  It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but “The Greatest Love of All” is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message, crucial really. And it’s beautifully stated on the album.

I was planning to go back to the gym today but I did not. Instead I ate my weight in junk food from all the fucking holiday gift baskets that have been showing up at the office.

srsly:

This is me today.  And I’ll probably have some of that ice cream later.  Though hopefully I make it to the gym tonight, but it’s damn cold outside and it’s a bit of a walk.  Hmmmmm….

I forgot to move my salad dressing and coffee creamer out of the refrigerator that was being cleaned last night and now they are gone.

I want to be angry about this but I have only myself to blame.  Plus I laugh privately when it happens to other people and they complain about it, my turn I suppose.

2010 Movies

Looking over Wikipedia’s list of 2010 movies, I have seen 30.  Seems low.  I think I said this last year too.  Oh well.

I went over that list of 30 and pulled out the ones I really enjoyed, and it just so happened to be a list of 10.  Wiki’s list have proven to be incomplete in the past so I maye have missed one, but I can’t think of one if I did.

In release date order, here are my top 10 movies of 2010 so far.

The Book of Eli
Shutter Island
Kick-Ass
Get Him to the Greek
Splice
The A-Team
Toy Story 3
Inception
The Town
The Social Network

I think need to see some non-mainstream new releases.  Also I bet True Grit will be added to that list when I see it.  And there are probably some more that I didn’t see in theaters and haven’t rented yet.

I didn’t even really really love anything on this list except Kick-Ass, maybe Inception.  2010 just felt overall pretty weak for movies.
